SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- Menlo Men's Soccer clinched an electrifying comeback win over Academy of Art on Saturday morning, defeating the Urban Knights 2-1 in an intense battle at Treasure Island Field. The Oaks overturned a first-half deficit with two pivotal second-half goals, securing their seventh conference win of the season.
Oaks Second Half Effort Stuns Urban Knights
Academy of Art opened the scoring in the 34th minute but the Oaks did not let that change their attack as they were still able to fire off 6 shots in the first half. Despite the setback, Menlo entered the second half with determination and found their stride. In the 54th minute, defender David Stuber leveled the score at 1-1 by successfully converting a penalty kick after a foul in the box was drawn by Johan Mendoza Aguilar in a dangerous attack from the Oak midfielder. This penalty goal would account for his 4th of the season, not missing a single penalty in 2024. Less than 10 minutes later, Menlo surged ahead when Mattia Celant netted the game-winning goal off an assist from Oliver Mayer. Mayer used his technical genius to dribble to the end line from nearly the 50-yard line to find Oaks open in the box. Celant's half-volley from the center box found its way over the goalkeeper, pushing the Oaks into the lead, which they held through the final whistle.
Oak Standouts
David Stuber, one of the Oaks star center backs, is now at 4 goals this season, just behind Isak Haukefaer who currently leads the Oaks with 6. Mattia Celant also tabbed his 4th goal of the season against the Urban Knights. Celant is the Oaks super power when on the field in late-minutes because today marks his third game-winner of his four goals! Martin Fiala was back in the net for Menlo and played a huge role in their victory.
Menlo and Academy of Art were closely matched in shot production, with Menlo recording 10 shots to the Urban Knights' 9. Menlo managed to place five of those shots on target, while Academy of Art tallied four shots on goal. Both teams displayed intense physicality throughout the game, with Academy of Art committing 18 fouls compared to Menlo's 10. Each team received three yellow cards, although Menlo was also handed a red card early in the first half. Both goalkeepers were tested and made three critical saves, keeping the match highly competitive.
