Menlo Women's Volleyball Battles Against Concordia-Irvine but Falls in Four Sets

Irvine, CA – Menlo Women's Volleyball headed down to Irvine, CA to take on the Eagles of Concordia University Irvine in a fierce and competitive PacWest match at the CU Arena. The match saw a nail-biting four-set contest where the Eagles would ultimately emerge victorious in four sets.

Fighting to the End
In the first set of the match between the Oaks and Eagles, the set saw 13 tied scores and 4 lead changes which showed both team's eagerness to take the first set. The Oaks were able to collect 13 kills on the set, with also having a total 8 blocks as a team. The Oaks defense and timely offensive attacks created a promising start to the match, but the Eagles slipped away and collected the final points 22-25. In the second set, the Eagles were able to take an early lead and hold onto that lead for most of set. Being down by 12-19, it seemed as if the Eagles were going to close out the second set with a huge lead, but the Oaks flipped the script and decided to make a huge comeback and close out the second set with 3 straight service aces from Katharine Mumm, winning it 25-23! Menlo was unable to hold onto the momentum they created in the second set, and Concordia-Irvine took a dominating third set 10-25. The fourth and final set saw Menlo battling it out point-for-point against Concordia-Irvine with both teams giving their all. The set saw 11 ties and 6 crucial lead changes that reflected how tightly contested the set was. Despite Menlo's resilience and strong plays, the Eagles kept on applying offensive pressure and picked up momentum, recording 18 kills in the set. The Oaks tried to keep pace, but attacking errors in key moments allowed Concordia-Irvine to pull ahead and close out the set and match 22-25. Menlo's performance in the match showed heart and determination, but the Eagles consistency proved too much to overcome in the final stretch.

Block Party
Janet Moala was an important defensive factor for the Oaks as she lit up the net with 10 total blocks on the night, an incredible defensive effort that helped Menlo challenge CUI at the net. Hannah Torres once again was a key contributor for Menlo throughout the match, delivering and leading the Oaks in kills with 11 on the night. Keely Grant showed efficiency at the net as she recorded 9 kills with a team high .409 hitting percentage. In addition, she contributed 5 blocks which disrupted the Eagles attack in critical moments. Giulia Marinelli also was another standout at the net, recording 9 kills and 3 blocks on the night! These players helped Menlo stay in the match, particularly in their defensive efforts and block game, keeping the match competitive against a challenging CUI team.
