Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Drew Barton

Menlo Women’s Basketball Wins 7th Straight with 81-67 Victory Over UCSC

Atherton, CA-Since December 21st of last year fans of Menlo Women's Basketball have only known one thing and that thing is winning. Tonight's matchup against the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs marked the second time the two teams would face off with the Oaks having pulled out the victory down in Santa Cruz by a score of 67-58. This time inside Haynes-Prim Pavilion Menlo managed to secure their seventh straight victory defeating UCSC 81-67 in a total team effort. This is a team hitting their stride and beating opponents by double digits with consistency over the last month.

Everyone Chips In

Tonight saw everyone contribute in total team effort. Four players scored in double figures and four players had multiple assists as well. For the game Jasmyne Huggins was the leading scorer with 20 points on nine made shots. She also filled up the statsheet with seven boards, three assists, three steals and an impressive zero turnovers. In other words, the Banana Slugs had no answer for #21 as she impacted every facet of the game.

Kiara Brown had another "Kiara Brown" game that saw her score 19 points with eight rebounds as well. Anyone familiar with Menlo basketball shouldn't be surprised to see the reigning All-Conference player continuing to put up big numbers on a nightly basis. Another day at the office for the senior.

Lastly, the starting trio of Aliya Hunter, Alberte Frisch and Shay Boley were all highly efficient shooters, ball handlers and playmakers for coach Spataro. Boley in particular was impressive, showing off her ability to do a little bit of everything on the court. While 14 points was a plus, her six rebounds, five assists and only one turnover really standout. When Boley is getting others involved and protecting the ball, the Oaks offense is capable of hitting a whole new gear.

Frisch and Hunter were lights out from three as the two would hit a perfect five of five from deep. Frisch is now hitting a very strong 38% of her threes on the season including hitting at least three in her last two outings. Hunter has been even more on fire from deep and here 2-2 performance from the arc tonight is just another reason to buy stock in her scorching hot 46% from three for the season. Menlo has found a pair of sharpshooters and they are forcing opposing defenses to take note.

Up Next…

Non-conference play has officially ended and the Oaks will be right back to GSAC competition this Saturday with northern Califonira rival Jessup University coming to town. The Oaks have won two of the last three matchups against the Warriors including the most recent game inside Haynes-Prim Pavilion by a score of 54-45. Look to coaches Spataro and Rogers to have the team dialed in to keep the wins rolling.
