Women’s Soccer Battles with UC Santa Cruz Despite Poor Air Quality. Drops Close Match, 1-2.

ATHERTON, CA – Women's Soccer put up a great battle today despite having to play through poor air quality. The Banana Slugs found the back of the net late in the second half to take the game, 1-2.

Haley Dunham Scores Header Goal for the Oaks

Sophomore, Haley Dunham has found her stride in the last two games for Menlo. She started this match against UCSC coming off of a two-goal performance against Bethesda where Menlo ended up winning, 4-0. Haley continued her offensive efforts this match with a total of 4 shots on goal. A set play was in favor of the Oaks near the center circle in the 62'. Kawai Acopan perfectly lofted the ball to the far post, where Dania Ben Shabat volleyed the ball to the near post. Through the traffic in the box and off balance, Haley Dunham found the ball and placed it in the back of the net using her head. That makes 3 for the season so far for Dunham. It was a great set piece from the Oaks that was executed to perfection!

The Oaks remained tied 1-1 until the 76' where UCSC pulled ahead 1-2. Menlo was on the defense for a large portion of the match. There were 5 corner kicks allotted to the Banana Slugs where Menlo were only allowed 2. Despite many set pieces against, Menlo defended as a team and were able to clear away many efforts before any shots were taken. Captain, Taryn Thalhamer, showed another stellar 90-minute performance on the back line for the Oaks. Taryn plays a vital role on set pieces whether she is on the defense or offense. The Oaks look to her as a chance-maker!

Giorgia Melcore Tallies 6 Saves

Sophomore from Milan, Italy, Giorgia Melcore, has started in all 4 matches for the Oaks. In 315 minutes played, Melcore has a 1.67 goals against average with 15 saves so far in the 2023 season. Against UC Santa Cruz, Giorgia showed finesse on some incredible chances from the Banana Slugs that resulted in corner kicks instead of goals. Of the 8 shots that were on target, Melcore only allowed two past her. Only in her early years as an Oak, Giorgia continues to show composure while up against aggressively offensive opponents.
