Menlo Softball's Season Comes to an End After Dropping Doubleheader to the Jessup Warriors

LINCOLN, CA -- Menlo drops both games to Jessup in their final regular season doubleheader in Lincoln, CA. With these two losses the Oaks season comes to an end despite a late-season push for the final spot in the GSAC playoffs.

Game 1: Menlo 2 - 4 Jessup
The Warriors took an early lead in Game 1 for the victory. The Oaks never go down without a fight as they had a 2-out rally in the 3rd inning to score their two runs. It started with a left field double from Hailey Roloff to give Grace Christian a runner in scoring position. Christian followed up with a RBI triple to right center field to score Roloff and land herself on third base. Alexandra Attard responded with an RBI infield single to the shortstop to bring Christian home making it 3-2.

Senior, #1 Grace Christian, leads the GSAC in triples with 6. She is at the top of the Oaks in batting average with .355. In her 111 at bats this entire season, she has earned 39 hits: 9 being doubles, 6 being triples, and one being a home run against Corban back in February. She has also batted in 20 runners, scored 24 runs herself, was walked 12 times, and stolen 8 bases. Grace has been a dominant force this year on the hitting side and fielding side with a .985 fielding percentage. As a 1st baseman she has been a part of 255 putouts, 7 being double plays. Menlo is lucky she is staying one more season to dominate in her final year of eligibility!

The Oaks were able to get a few more runners on base but were not able to bring them in for a score. At the end of Game 1, Jessup found a way to take over the game with one more run scored in the bottom of the 6th to make it, 4-2.

Game 2: Menlo 2 - 4 Jessup
Grace Christian once again contributed to the Oaks 2 runs scored in their loss in Game 2. In the top of the 5th inning, Menlo was down 3-0 when Jolena Velasquez, who went 2-3 with a run scored in Game 2, led off with a single down the right field line. Jadalee Takara then reached 1st off of a fielder's choice which did not make it in time which advanced Velasquez to second base. That led to a Grace Christian 2 RBI ground-rule double, which would have clearly been a triple had the ball not bounced over the Jessup fence, to score Takara and Velasquez to make it 3-2.

Similar to the first game, the Warriors pushed through with one more run in the 6th to secure the 4-2 defeat. It came down to dominant pitching on the Warriors side that the Oaks could not overcome. Despite a hard fought battle, the Warriors now advance to the GSAC playoffs.

Thank you Graduating Seniors!
Menlo Softball will be saying goodbye to two seniors who will be graduating from Menlo this May!

One will be Kianna Lumm, the senior catcher from Sunnyvale, California. She ended her senior year with 12 appearances and completing 16 at-bats during her time as an Oak. One of her most memorable moments was during the Jessup sweep in series one of the conference when the Oaks ended Game 2 in 6 innings, 8-0. Kianna had bases loaded with no outs. She was able to get the ball down in play for the RBI single to score Alexandra Attard

The second graduating Oak will be Jadalee Takara. An outfielder from Honolulu, Hawaii, she has made 53 appearances as an Oak. She has tallied 12 runs scored, 4 RBI, and a triple. She is one of few Oaks who have been here since her freshman year. She will be dearly missed for her work ethic on the field and in the classroom!

Now what?
Sadly this was the last time taking the field for the Softball 2023 season. GSAC playoffs happen in Irvine, CA Monday-Wednesday May 1-3. Softball had promising moments this run and only hope to improve from here. Coach Sky has a large committed class in-coming for next season that will hopefully become key players as well!
