Softball Split Doubleheader with the Lions, 2-3 and 5-3.

COSTA MESA, CA -- Softball fought hard today in the split between the Vanguard Lions, 1-1. The first game ended in a loss to the Lions 3-2. But they came back hard to earn the 7th inning win, 5-3!

Game 1: Menlo 2 - 3 Vanguard
The Oaks gave up and early lead to the Lions in the bottom of the first giving up 3 runs. They were able to hold them to just the 3 after Ayanna Rubio entered the game and took control of the circle. She went 5.2 innings pitched, and 5 strikeouts. On the season so far, the Junior has been solid for Menlo. She has pitched 38.2 innings with 28 strikeouts!

The Oaks responded well after giving up 3 runs by scoring a run in the top of the 2nd! Hailey Roloff started the inning off with a double to left field to get on base. Jolena Velasquez singled to center field to bring Roloff home to make it 3-1. That would be Roloffs seventh run of the season.

The score stayed stagnant up until the 7th inning where Menlo made things exciting when they scored another run! Maya Bivens-Sommerville made it on base after being walked. Jada Takara, who pinch hit for Sofia Quientero, bunted through the right side to make it on base and advance Sommerville. With 2 outs, Freshman Emma Medina did a job and singled to left center for the RBI! In an attempt to advance one more base, Jada Takara was caught stealing third to end the game, however the run still counted to make it 3-2.

Game 2: Menlo 5 - 3 Vanguard
Menlo was not going to leave Costa Mesa without a win and that is exactly what they did! Jolena Velasquez began the 1st inning with a single to center field. After advancing on a ground out by Emma Medina, Velasquez was in scoring position for Maya Bivens-Sommerville. She ended up singling to right field for the RBI and scored Velasquez in to make it 1-0. Velasquez went 2-4 in the Game 2 with 2 runs scored.

The 4th inning brought the Oaks to life after earning 2 more runs to tied it 3-3. Alexandra Attard had Rolloff on third and Lara Edeker, pinch runner for Sommerville, with 0 outs. A bunt advanced Edeker and scored Rolloff to make the score 2-3! Energy was high because Bella Cortez followed that with a single to the shortstop to advance Attard and claim first base and have bases loaded. It was Macie Figueroa's patience that allowed her the walk, and the score from Attard to tie things up. It stayed tied until the 7th inning where Menlo gave it all they had left to get the final two runs and the victory!

Jolena Velasquez singled again to right field to lead the inning and stole second. Emma Medina once again was came through with a sacrifice bunt which forced a throwing error by the Lions catcher to score Velasquez. To seal the deal Maya Bivens-Sommerville scored Medina in with a ground out to second base for the final score 5-3. Menlo comes home with a win under their belt!
