Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Drew Barton

Menlo Men’s Soccer GSAC Tournament Ends with 1-2 Loss to The Masters

Atherton, CA- It was far from the result fans of Oak soccer wanted out on Wunderlich Field but unfortunately Menlo Men's Soccer's run at a GSAC Tournament Title has come to an end. The Oaks battled for 90 straight minutes but came up just short by a score of 1-2 against The Masters. While the loss undoubtedly stings, this is far from the last time coach Lambert's squad could possibly take the field. The NAIA National Tournament is right around the corner, the Oaks now await the chance for an at-large bid!

Mattia Celant Stays Hot

The high point of the day came thanks to the continued strong play of junior Mattia Celant. Celant entered today's match with three goals scored on the year and had game winners in two of Menlo's last three matches. As the 53rd minute rolled around Celant once again found the back of the net for his third goal in four matches. Thanks to a well placed assist by fellow Swiss native Oliver Mayer, Celant launched the ball perfectly into the right corner before the Mustang's keeper had a chance to react.

National Tournament Hopes

While the team's chances of securing an automatic bid to the national tournament have been lost, one defeat does not wipe away months of high level play and strong victories. On the year Menlo was undefeated and put together an impressive resume over the course of the season. The team defeated #20 Southern Oregon 4-1 while also taking care of business against a pair of teams receiving votes in Vanguard and UC Merced. That kind of resume should have the team firmly in the hunt for an at-large bid!

Up Next…

Now the Oaks will play the waiting game to see what the future holds. There is no doubt that this defeat was difficult but the boys should hold their heads high after putting together one of the best seasons in Menlo Soccer history. We will be following the selection process closely as we hope for more Menlo Men's Soccer in the near future.
