ATHERTON, CA – Runs were at a premium on Saturday out at Cartan Field where Menlo NCBA Baseball and No. 7 Stanford combined to score only seven times across 14.0 innings of a doubleheader. Tied late, the first contest ended in walk-off fashion for the Cardinal 2-1 while the series finale was won 3-1 after the sides exchanged four scoreless frames to start.
Game One: #7 Stanford 2, Menlo 1
Junior
Israel Garcia impressed in his start against a potent Stanford offense, keeping the Cardinal off the scoreboard through the first three innings before an error allowed one unearned run to score in the bottom of the fourth. He finished his 4.2 innings on the mound with just that run on his ledger after surrendering only two hits while walking one and striking out one.
Seventh inning drama began with junior
Joseph Salmeron reaching first on a dropped third strike then it was junior
Aidan Mitchell who doubled down the left field line to bring his teammate home and tie the game at 1-1. With the bases loaded in the bottom half of the frame, Stanford managed a high chopper in the infield that ultimately brought in the winning run.
Game Two: #7 Stanford 3, Menlo 1
Stanford reached the scoreboard first once again in game two, but it was only after four scoreless frames were tossed by freshman
Ashley Geary-Smith who surrendered just five hits in 4.1 innings of work, walking two and striking out one.
A double and a single brought in a pair of runs in the fifth for a 2-0 advantage, but Stanford's lead was cut in half in the sixth thanks to junior
Matthew Puahi-Kapololu's run batted in. The Cardinal tacked on one more score late for the 3-1 final.
