The Big Freeze Results

RICHMOND, CA
 – With ice in her veins down the stretch of Dominican's The Big Freeze, Menlo Women's Golf freshman Kim Penzold made it back-to-back tournament wins on Tuesday, besting 55 other golfers while helping the Oaks finish seventh out at Richmond Golf Club.

Oaks Highlights
-Penzold finished with 26 pars, ending as the overall leader of the 56-golfer field
-Penzold and Haley Hoang combined for 11 birdies in the tournament
-Julia Torrez and Laura Goertzen combined to rise 13 spots on the final day

Penzold Rallies From Three Strokes Down With Huge Birdies Late
Entering the last round one stroke back of leader No. 25 Lauren Lee of Western Washington and one stroke ahead of Point Loma's Summer Schafer, Penzold was the picture of consistency on the front nine. She parred her first eight holes then quickly bounced back from a double bogey on Hole 1 with a birdie on Hole 2 then, with Lee and Schafer on either side of her with three holes to play, Penzold birdied two of her last three holes while Lee bogeyed two and Schafer also birdied two to end with both opponents one stroke back of the now two-time tournament winner from Rathenow, Germany. She finished the round at an even-par 72 and was at a 1-under-par 143 for the two-day event.

Each moving up multiple spots on Tuesday, sophomore Kayla Lancaster and junior Julia Torrez were the next two Oaks on the leaderboard. Lancaster dropped her second birdie of the tournament on her second hole and proceeded to par the next six en route to a 6-over-par 78 that had her tied for 33rd with a 17-over-par 161 to end the afternoon. Meanwhile, Torrez jumped up five places with a strong back nine that featured six pars and one birdie for the 7-over-par 79 that helped her to a 20-over-par 164 in 37th overall.

Freshman Laura Goertzen passed eight others with a second round highlighted by back-to-back birdies on Holes 4 and 5. She finished in a tie for 44th following a season-best 6-over-par 78 guided her 23-over-par 167 over the two days of action. That quartet helped the Oaks take seventh overall ahead of Jessup, Chico State, and Northwest Nazarene.
