ATHERTON, CA – The first match of the season for Menlo Women's Tennis delivered plenty of excitement as an early advantage for Fresno Pacific was countered by three singles wins before all eyes were on a three-set battle on Court 1 that ended with the Sunbirds narrowly in front 4-3 on Saturday out at Cartan Courts.

Doubles victories on the first two courts enabled FPU to begin with a 1-0 lead despite freshman

Nia Macay being on their way to a win up 4-1. The Sunbirds' advantage grew to 2-0 with the conclusion of the first singles match, but Menlo steadily worked back to a 3-3 tie after Jovic defeated Jessica McLean 6-3, 6-4 on Court 4, sophomore
Ombeline Robilliart prevailed over Margarita Munoz 6-3, 6-1 on Court 5, and Macay returned to best Malia Mitchell 6-1, 6-3 on Court 6.
With just one match to play on Court 1, junior
Zofia Dziewiecka played point-for-point with Fabiana Gonzalez, who holds a No. 20 national ranking. Though Dziewiecka was in front thanks to an opening-set victory, Gonzalez rallied back for what would be identical scores in the sets that followed, winning 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 even though Dziewiecka led 2-1 and 3-2 in that final frame.
