SANTA CRUZ, CA – With multiple tiebreakers and third sets needed, Menlo Men's Tennis showed grit and perseverance throughout the Oaks' 6-1 victory in a rain-rescheduled matchup with UC Santa Cruz out at UCSC Tennis Center on Thursday.
Trio Of Three-Set Triumphs Cap Win
Though the tandem of junior
Robin McAlpine and freshman
David Espinosa Navarro provided an early lead for Menlo with their 6-1 win on Court 2, the doubles point came down to Court 1 where a dramatic 7-6 (7-5) tiebreaker was won by senior
Asger Emil Ildor and graduate student
Ian Ramiro Perez.
The match was evened at 1-1 early in singles action before McAlpine returned the Oaks to an advantageous position with his 6-2, 6-3 victory on Court 1. Junior
Henry Riccioni-Brown needed just two sets (6-4, 6-3) to pick up a win on Court 3, meaning that one more singles victory was all Menlo needed to officially secure the win overall. That final result took quite a bit of time as all three remaining matches went to a third set, but after Espinosa Navarro rallied to best Hari Raghavan 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 on Court 3, the end was in hand. Sophomore
Yuto Morita finished with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 triumph on Court 6 then graduate student
Galien Del Vecchio provided the exclamation mark with his 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) third-set tiebreaker on Court 5.
