ITA West Regionals Results | Singles Draw | Doubles Draw
FRESNO, Calif. – With an opportunity to qualify to the upcoming inaugural ITA Singles & Doubles Championships on the line,
Menlo Women's Tennis had plenty of highlights out at Fresno Pacific's Haak Tennis Complex during the ITA West Regionals. Among the standouts were the combination of senior
Zofia Dziewiecka and junior
Isabella Stuurman, who punched their ticket to Tuscaloosa after an epic doubles final, and freshman
Mia Breuer, who logged four victories en route to the singles semifinals.
Menlo Duo Demonstrate Determination In Doubles Draw
Over the course of three days of action, the tandem of Dziewiecka and Stuurman proved to be rather dominant. Their journey to the final began with an 8-6 victory over Point Loma's Isabel Hahn and Tessa Rozendal then clutch points in a tiebreaker helped the Oaks duo outplay Devyn Rodriguez and Valentina Gonzalez of Colorado Mesa 8-7 (7-4).
In the quarterfinals, Dziewiecka and Stuurman took down Fresno Pacific's Halle Faherty and Jessica McLean 8-5 on the Sunbirds' home courts and proceeded to better another Point Loma team in Anna Pallencaoe and Emely Valencia 8-2 to reach the final. There, as the format expanded to a best-of-three sets, the Oaks bounced back from a loss in the first frame and were later mere points away from claiming the ITA West Regional Championship, falling to Hawaii Pacific's Evi Roobol and Kaia Sperry 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 but still qualifying for the ITA Doubles Championship in three weeks.
Breuer Breakout In Singles Draw
With just two collegiate matches under her belt entering the tournament, Breuer made her presence known in the West Region. Though she would go on to post three more wins thereafter, perhaps her biggest came in her first Round of 64 match against the No. 1 seed Evi Roobol of Hawaii Pacific. After immediately taking the first set, Breuer made a decisive move in the third set, triumphing 6-4, 4-6, 10-5.
That momentum for Breuer carried into a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Concordia's Ming Fu Chen then another in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) against Thea Donarski of Westmont in the Round of 16. Dominican's Sofia Acuna put up a fight particularly in the second set, but Breuer hung tough for the 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 result to advance to the semifinals. The Kusterdingen, Germany native would end her run against another Concordia competitor in Magdalena Nunez Pureco 6-2, 6-4, but Breuer certainly made herself a player to watch ahead of the spring season with her impressive singles showing.
In addition to her doubles success, multiple singles wins also came for Dziewiecka. She began by bettering Colorado Mesa's Catalina Ballon 7-5, 6-2 then outlasted a familiar face in Stanislaus State's Katrine Damjaer 6-3, 0-6, 10-2. That led Dziewiecka to a place in the Round of 16 where she could not get past Fresno Pacific's Alice Kubler despite going into a third set once again 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.
