Sharks’ Long-Range Barrage Too Much For Menlo Men’s Basketball

HONOLULU, HI – Though Menlo Men's Basketball outshot Hawaii Pacific from the field in the opening half, a grand total of 14 3-pointers pushed the Sharks to the 82-69 Pacific West Conference victory on Saturday to conclude the Oaks' Hawaii road trip.

Oaks Highlights

-Now one of three Oaks averaging 12.0+ points, Kai Brown netted 11 points off the bench

Brown, Thompson Combine For 20 Of Menlo's 32 Bench Points
Five points from senior forward JaMaal Unuakhalu helped Menlo gain a 7-2 advantage from the opening tip, but Hawaii Pacific answered with a 13-2 run that included three triples. As the game became a bit of a three-point contest, freshman forward Luke Wieskamp and junior forward Salim Arikat both connected from long range then sophomore guard Quentin Thompson converted a three-point play to help bring the Oaks within three at 27-24.

Six straight by the Sharks brought them their largest lead before the final six and a half minutes saw Unuakhalu and sophomore guard Kai Brown combine for all 15 points during a 15-6 momentum shift that forced a 39-39 tie at halftime.

Back-and-forth action featured multiple layups by Unuakhalu, who made eight of first nine shots in the contest, and three made free throws by sophomore guard Jonathan Moxie. Two more triples by HPU came during a 10-0 run to go up 63-48 and the Sharks would never look back, making three more 3-pointers in a game that saw them attempt 35 in total. The final result was an 82-69 victory for the home team.
