Santa Rosa, CA - The regular season for the Menlo Women's Golf team has concluded, and the Oaks were able to walk off the course with a second place finish out of a field of eleven teams. It was a total team effort today and everyone played a pivotal role throughout the entire tournament.
Obermuller Breaking Records Left and Right
Holly Obermuller may have just put up a performance these last two days that will forever be remembered in the history of the Menlo Women's Golf program. To kick things off, Obermuller was the winner of the Sonoma State Golf Invitational with a four under final 18 holes of play. A total of nine strokes under par makes this victory for Obermuller her second tournament win in a row; the first being in Moorpark, CA for the CLU Invitational. This is the first time ever in the history of the program where a member of the starting five has won two tournaments back to back.
Furthermore; this tournament win for Obermuller is not only her second victory of the year, this just happens to be her fourth in her Menlo collegiate career. Obermuller joins some elite company in Menlo alumnus Dasa Urbankova having the second most career tournament wins in program history. Catherine Batang currently has the most with 5 career tournament wins, three of which came during her senior year alone.
Last but not least; Obermuller shot a 67 yesterday and now a 68 today, these two rounds put together had Obermuller finishing the tournament at nine strokes under par. Not only is this a new Sonoma State Golf Invitational record, but this also puts Obermuller at the top record books with the lowest 36 hole tournament score in program history. This record was previously held by Urbankova who had a seven under par tournament; the tournament also being the Sonoma State Invitational at the same golf course back in 2021.
Looking at the whole picture; as of late, Obermuller is playing some of the best golf in her collegiate career. Her name will forever be engraved in the Menlo Women's Golf program record books, going down as one of the best to walk the halls of Menlo College.
After the tournament Obermuller said, "I could not have asked for a better last tournament than this one! The putts were falling and my approach shots were great. I am super proud of myself and the whole team! We did great and are ready for conference championships."
Team Buy-In
The Oaks as a team finished off this final tournament of the regular season on a high, finishing in second place overall and everyone was involved. Rori Fanning went low yesterday, Angelina Pohahau had a tournament PR with an 83 yesterday, Isa San Antonio is back, Julia Torrez was firing on all cylinders, and Sakshi Mehta was dialed with her iron game. All the girls left it all out there on the course this weekend and showed that if they truly believe in themselves, and have confidence in their abilities as players, they can make anything happen.
Director of Golf Mike Givens said, "I'm proud of how the girls went about business these past two days, there are some things that we will wrinkle out but the girls played well. We have two weeks to get ready for Las Vegas, and we'll be ready to go. As far as Holly goes, that was a performance that you don't get to see everyday. I'm very proud and happy for her as she works very hard and no one is more deserving."
Assistant Coach Ryan Stefko after the tournament said, "Another great week for the women's golf program; there were a lot of highs and lows we could take from this week, but the girls came back strong the second day to rise up the leaderboard to finish in second place. It was awesome to see them grind it out. It was amazing how Holly Obermuller also performed this week; with a spectacular bogey free round the second round, and a 67 the first round which is another personal record. She's playing the best golf of her career and it's a great time for that to be happening senior year. There are a lot of positives and some things we still need a tuneup for the next two weeks before we head out to fabulous Las Vegas for our first ever PacWest Conference Championship. I am super stoked for practice and can't wait to see how we finish the Spring season."
Assistant Coach Jake Malone said, "Record breaking performance from Holly! The senior showing out! Glad we got a great team result as the ladies have been battling all year; deserved victory for each of them with the second place finish. Hope the ladies can start to believe in themselves as much as our coaches do."
Up Next
