Menlo Men’s Golf Battles to the End to Take 2nd Place in PCH Invitational

9/10/2024 9:20:00 PM

Carmel, CA - With the end to the first tournament of the Fall Season in the books, Menlo Men's Golf never lost hope on what seemed like a steep mountain to climb.  It took a team effort to rise to the challenge that they faced to come out and obtain second place in the PCH Invitational at The Quail Golf Club.  Not only did the Oaks take second place, but Menlo Men's Golf had the round of the tournament shooting a combined one over par on day two.

Nicolas-Guy Landry Answers the Call

After shooting four over par in round one of the tournament, Nicolas-Guy Landry was not fazed at all by what obstacles he had to face in day two.  Being the first tee time of the day, starting on hole ten, Landry started off the round with back to back pars.  On the fifth hole, Landry came out with a monster drive that landed in the middle of the fairway, followed with a great approach shot which left him with a three foot putt for eagle.  The phone rang, and Landry answered with an eagle.  After making the turn back to holes one and two, Landry successfully made back to back birdies which had him feeling fantastic.  He went on to finish the round leading the Oaks with a two under par, 69, round.

Kevin Chen has Bounce Back Day

Sophomore Kevin Chen, residing from Carmel, CA, looked to be struggling a little bit in round one of the tournament having shot eight over par.  However; Chen was not flustered, having come out on day two and shooting two under par and shooting a 69.   He ended the round with a total of five birdies on the scorecard for the day.  Chen played a major role in the Oaks success to take second place.

Freshmen Step Up When Needed Most

Freshmen Ryan Bello, Emmett Shell, and Roark Holstein all made their collegiate debut and had a significant impact for the Oaks.  Unsure of what to expect, all three of these young men stepped up on the big stage and successfully helped Menlo shoot the low round of the tournament as a team.  Assistant Coach Ryan Stefko had this to say following the tournament, "There were a lot of new faces out there, and players' first experience playing in a college event.  Although they seemed to struggle at the beginning, they battled and came back on day two with more confidence.  I am very excited to see what the future entails."
