Atherton, CA-In what may be their biggest test of their non-conference schedule, Menlo Men's Tennis faced off against a local NCAA Division I opponent in the University of San Francisco. The Dons made the trip down the peninsula to take on the Oaks and while USF would pull out the victory, Menlo did not back down in the face of a high level opponent.
Oaks Push Dons to Limit in Doubles Play
USF would eventually come away with a win in the doubles portion of the competition but Menlo took two of the three matches to an overtime point. The underclassmen duo of freshman Robin Mcalpine and sophomore Ruben Russwurm would lose their doubles match by a score of 5-7 after a competitive, back and forth match. Emmanuel Azam and Tanguy Calicis would also fall by a score of 5-7 but again it was a solid display for the tandem that they will likely be able to build off.
David Mulas Zelenskaya Submits Solid Showing in the Singles
Once singles play got underway, the Dons were able to pull away a bit but senior and team captain David Mulas Zelenskaya gave his Division I opponent all he could handle. Both sets would eventually end in favor of the Dons but not before Mulas Zelenskaya made it quite competitive. As one of the Oaks key returners, the senior out of Las Rozas, Spain will be called upon to be a huge leader on and off the court.
Up Next…
The Oaks will be back in action tomorrow this time against Chabot College. It is early in the year and despite the loss, facing opponents of this caliber will serve the Oaks well in the long run.
