MODESTO, CA – Menlo College's Weightlifting team delivered an impressive performance at the Golden West Open Don Wilson Memorial, hosted by Resident Barbell Club in Modesto, California on Sunday. Competing against a field of elite lifters, Menlo athletes showcased their hard work and dedication, setting multiple personal and competition records. The Oaks even saw action from recent alumni Bryan Amaral!
Sydney Uyeda
Sydney Uyeda led the way with a standout performance, going 6 for 6 in her lifts. She recorded a competition personal record (PR) in the snatch with a lift of 66kg, and a new personal best in the clean and jerk with 76kg, for a combined total of 142kg. This was Syd's first appearance in her sophomore season at Menlo, after qualifying for her first University Nationals as a weightlifter back in March of 2024. Uyeda's flawless performance on Sunday reflects her commitment and preparation, and it was a proud moment for the Menlo College team.
James Woodley
James Woodley also made a significant impact, achieving a 105kg competition PR in the snatch and a 128kg competition PR in the clean and jerk. His combined total of 233kg with four successful lifts was a testament to his skill and strength under pressure. At University Nationals in March, Woodley put out an impressive 229kg total, so having added 4 kilos in another competition setting proves Jame's hard work and dedication in the weight room.
Fonz Ortega
Fonz Ortega made his first appearance back on the platform as a sophomore this season and lifted an impressive 98kg in the snatch and 120kg in the clean and jerk, finishing with a 218kg total and achieving 3 of 6 successful lifts. This would add 5 more kilos since last years performance in the same Golden West Open, when he finished with a 213kg total. His solid performance reinforced his reputation as a consistent and powerful lifter who is constantly looking to improve.
Jared Ambrosio
Jared Ambrosio rounded out Menlo's strong showing with a best snatch of 100kg and a clean and jerk of 134kg, amassing a team-high 234kg total with 5 out of 6 successful lifts. Jared has been one of the found members of the Menlo College Weightlifting teams and continues to lead by example on the platform.
