CEDAR FALLS, IA. – Menlo Women's Wrestling rang in the New Year with a clean sweep on day one of the NWCA National Duals inside the UNI-Dome. The Oaks began with a 40-6 victory over #19 Baker University with 6 pins earned. The quarterfinal matchup was against #7 Campbellsville (Ky.) where Menlo outperformed in almost every weight class to win, 32-12. Today proved the level of preparation and grit the Oaks have in them and they can now look forward to some of the toughest wrestlers in the semifinals against #6 Texas Wesleyan.
#3 Menlo 40 - 6 #19 Baker University
The score was 5-6, Baker in the lead, after the first three weight classes before Menlo came from behind to sweep the rest of the dual. Three back-to-back pins would ensue from Alana Vivas (123), Louisa Schwab (130) and Samantha Barragan (136). A 9-0 decision in favor of Desiree Jones would increase the lead to 25-6. The back end of the lineup decided the match in just 6 minutes. Shannon Workinger got the pin down in 32 seconds, the same amount of time it took for Barrigan. Two more falls from Kalila Shrive and Tavia Heidelberg-Tillotson secured the 40-6 victory to advance to the quarter final dual.
#3 Menlo 32 - 12 #7 Campbellsville
Despite a winning score, this dual was one of the most competitive matchups of the season for the Oaks. #10 Kayla McKinley-Johnson (101) defended her national rank with a 10-2 decision over #15 Riley Banyas. 109's went to Campbellsville but the Oaks responded with four more victories. #8 Alejandra Corral (116) earned the upset over #4 Icart Galumette after totaling a 11-4 decision after two periods. #8 Vivas (123) increases her rank after pinning #5 Josie Davis in just 30 seconds. #13 Stephanie Chavez (136) kept things rolling after taking down #10 Gabriella Perez in a close 6-4 decision. Pins from Workinger (155) and Heidelberg-Tillotson (191) would complete the day-one sweep, 32-12.
