ASHLAND, OR – Menlo Men's Wrestling sent a squad up to Ashland, Oregon to take on Southern Oregon University on Friday night. The Oaks gave up a large deficit in the beginning to the Raiders which was hard to make up despite some late wins from the big dogs. It is a quick turnaround for the Men as they make a pit stop in Redding, CA for a tri-dual against Simpson and Embry-Riddle (AZ) on Saturday starting at 2pm.
Vetted Oaks Earn Wins
Tonight the Oaks were mixing things up with the lineup to rest some of the starters after a long weekend in Iowa for the NWCA National Duals. This gave some new Oaks an opportunity to compete on the mat for Menlo against some of the best in the conference and NAIA. SOU took five straight weight classes to start off the dual ahead 0-23. Despite being down, the nationally ranked Oaks in the lineup were able to rally behind their teammates to add some points to their team score.
Rysan Leong, who is ranked #2 both nationally and in the Cascade, was one to bring the energy on the Menlo side. The Oak tallied a 17-3 major decision and held control of the mat across the entire three periods. At 184, #10 nationally ranked Isaiah Morales defended his #3 rank in the Cascade after taking down #7 Adrian Chavez-Morales in a 10-4 decision. Another head to head matchup was at 197 between the #17 (#4 in CCC) Oak Hunter James and #14 (#3 in CCC) Andrew Herrera of SOU. James and Herrera kept things tight but the Raider earned a late 3-point takedown to go ahead. The heavyweight match would fall in favor of SOU to complete the dual, 33-7. Tonight allowed some new Oaks to get some mat time on the road as well as add some wins to Leong and Morales' belts.
