GREAT FALLS, MT. – After Women's Wrestling placed 13 Oaks at the Battle of the Rockies Open, the Oaks competed in three different duals during Day 2 of the weekend. The three opponents featured were Umpqua Community College, Dakota Wesleyan University, and host school University of Providence (Mont.). The Oaks took losses against Umpqua and Providence but found victory over Dakota Wesleyan after winning every weight class in the dual. This trip was an opportunity for some newer Oaks to get more mat appearances before the new year and there were some great moments that can be taken away!
Zaballos Undefeated Across Duals Day
The junior from Castro Valley, CA was a National Qualifier last season after taking 2nd place at the Cascade Conference Championships as a sophomore. Ajayzee placed 3rd at the Battle of the Rockies Open just the day before, totaling 3 pins and a tech fall across 6 matches. Day two was another spectacular showing on the mat adding 3 more victories this weekend including a nationally ranked opponent. Zaballos began the day with a tech fall over Vaea LaMoureaux (Umpqua) by a score of 15-0. The next opponent was Isabelle Camarillo (Dakota Wesleyan) and Ajayzee gained a 10-0 lead during the three rounds to win by a major decision. The final match of the weekend and day was also Zaballos' most challenging competitor. Nationally ranked #14 Alicia Frank was taken down in an upset victory after Ajayzee laid down the pin. Ajayzee continues to show great technical skills during her mat appearances while helping support the rest of the Oaks as Team Captain!
Other Oak Success
The Oaks win against Dakota Wesleyan was a clean sweep after taking every weight class. Hayden Fry (116), Valynn Kwan (130), and Nikita Dhaliwal (170) each earned pins over the Tigers while the rest of the lineup totaled major decisions. Despite a loss to Providence, all three Oaks that won their matches were against nationally ranked opponents as well. Samantha Barragan got the upset win by pin against #18 Aspen Dodge at the 143 weight class. Then, Nikita Dhaliwal kept it a low scoring match and found the upset win by decision (4-1) against #16 Kacey Lee Pua. A lot of great takeaway can be brought back to Atherton from this Montana trip!
