Atherton, California- It was another day at the office for Menlo Men's Wrestling. The Oaks would leave the mat with a 39-9 over the visiting Lions. Six Oaks would secure victories alongside two Vanguard forfeits.
Antonio Dacosta from the 285 weight class (#21 Nationally) would get the evening started with a 3-1 decision over Mike Ruiz. Christopher Gaxiola (#11 Nationally) would also win the 149 weight class matchup against Bryant Avila. Gaxiola would win by a 5-3 decision.
Maximus Zamora (#17 Nationally) from the 174 class and Afton Silvis (#19 Nationally) took control in a more dominant fashion. Zamora was relentless in his 17-1, tech fall, win over Luke Lussier. The sophomore's big performance was capped off with a flex for the friendly Menlo crowd. At the 197 weight class Silvis also came ready to perform. He would win by a major decision of 11-1. Silvis poise and experience as a senior were on full display. He controlled the match from the jump, never giving his opponent, Steven Solis, an opening or opportunity.
The highlight of the night came in the form of back to back pins by Abraham Del Toro (#9 Nationally) and Rysan Leong (#6 Nationally). Just 35 seconds into the second period Del Toro saw his opening and took it. He would officially pin Vanguard's Philip Saucedo 3:35 seconds into their duel. Not to be outdone, the reigning Oak of the Week, Rysan Leong, was equally impressive. Leong didn't waste any time securing his victory. He would pin Ruben Rodriquez in just 2:10 seconds into the first period. The two upperclassmen were huge in expanding Menlo's lead in what was a 9-9 match early on.
The Oaks will not be resting on their laurels as they are back on the mat next Wednesday. Menlo will be taking a short drive down the road to match up with Stanford University on February 27th. Coach Martinez and the boys will be looking to make a statement against the local, PAC-12 program on The Farm.
